What is IndyCar? Featuring racing at a combination of superspeedways, short ovals, permanent road courses and temporary street circuits, the NTT INDYCAR SERIES offers its international lineup of drivers the most diverse challenges in motorsports. These stars drive single-seat, open-cockpit cars that feature a 2.2-liter, twin turbocharged, direct-injected V-6 engine optimized to run at 12,000 RPM with an estimated 500-700 horsepower. The consumer-relevant engines, supplied by Chevrolet and Honda, utilize Speedway E85R fuel. NTT INDYCAR SERIES cars reach speeds up to 235 mph at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Simply put, it’s the fastest, most diverse racing in the world! Visit IndyCar.com's INDYCAR 101 site for information on everything from chassis specs to driver fitness, and safety equipment to rulebook details.
What is Indy Lights? Indy Lights is an official development series of INDYCAR (the sanctioning body for the NTT INDYCAR SERIES) and the third and final step of the Road to Indy Presented by Cooper Tires ladder. The Road to Indy is the only driver development program in the world to feature a champion’s scholarship at every level to advance to the next step on the ladder system. Since the formation of the Road to Indy in 2010, 37 Indy Lights drivers have made career starts in the NTT INDYCAR SERIES, and since the inception of Indy Lights, this number totals 143. All but three of the 33 champions in the series history have moved up to the top step. The highly acclaimed series was revitalized with a state-of-the-art chassis in 2015, which will remain in competition to at least 2024. Sharing similarities to an Indy car, the Dallara IL-15 provides the appropriate training for drivers to make the step up - a six-speed, paddle-shift transmission, a 50HP "push-to-pass" feature, "drive-by-wire" throttle control and advanced engine management electronics.
